The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has clinched a resounding victory in the Arunachal Pradesh assembly elections, securing 46 out of 60 seats, paving the way for Pema Khandu to lead the state for a third consecutive term. The counting process, which unfolded at approximately 24 centers, witnessed the ruling party’s dominance, with 10 of its candidates emerging victorious unopposed.
The results, declared on an advanced counting day on Sunday, come as the term for the current assemblies of both Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim nears its end on June 2, necessitating the constitution of new legislative bodies. Notably, the assembly elections in Arunachal Pradesh coincided with the first and largest phase of the Lok Sabha polls on April 19, garnering an impressive voter turnout of 82.95 percent, surpassing the figures from the 2019 Assembly elections.
In a flashback to the 2019 polls, the BJP secured a significant victory, propelling Pema Khandu into the Chief Minister’s office for a second term. Khandu’s unopposed win from Mukto constituency, a family stronghold, reiterated his electoral prowess, reminiscent of his victories in 2011 and 2014 following his father’s demise, former CM Dorjee Khandu. The BJP’s triumph in 41 assembly constituencies, along with victories in both Lok Sabha seats, underscored its formidable position in Arunachal Pradesh politics.
The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), buoyed by its recent success in clinching three Assembly seats in Arunachal Pradesh, expressed optimism about its resurgence on the national stage. Praful Patel, the NCP’s working president, hailed the victory as a significant stride towards reclaiming national party status, citing previous triumphs in Maharashtra and Nagaland.
Echoing the jubilant sentiments, Chief Minister Pema Khandu described the BJP’s landslide victory as “historic,” envisioning a broader resonance of the party’s momentum across the country in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections. Khandu attributed the overwhelming mandate to the people’s trust in the BJP, emphasizing that the party’s seat tally of 46 marks a notable increase from its 2019 performance.
As the BJP celebrates its decisive triumph in Arunachal Pradesh, attention now turns towards the broader implications of this electoral mandate and its potential reverberations in the national political landscape.
