Hours after appointment, Ghulam Nabi Azad quits Congress campaign committee chairman of J&K

J&K: Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad resigned from the post of chairman of Congress campaign committee of J&K

New Delhi: Veteran Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad has resigned from the post of chairman of Congress Committee of the state. Azad, former Chief Minister of the erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir state, stepped down from the post hours after his appointment by central leadership of the party.

According to the report, the Congress leader submitted his resignation from the key post as he saw the appointments as a demotion for him. He is already a member of the party’s strong body all-India political affairs committee (PAC). The Congress sources, however, have claimed that Azad refused to take charge as chairman of Congress campaign committee chairman due to health reasons.

Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad has held many key positions in the past in Centre and erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir state. He has served as Union Minister in the Centre earlier. The leader, however, has been facing heat as he is among the 23 leaders who had written an letter to the Congress president Sonia Gandhi demanding restructuring of organisational structure of the party.

The Congress party has been facing internal heat since the letter to make organisational changes was written by a group of 23 leaders. These leaders have been demanding change in leadership to strengthen its fight in coming elections. The move of G 23 leaders, however, was opposed by those who are loyal to the Gandhi family. Even these leaders were alleged as rebellion in the party who have been damaging the party with very much intension.

Earlier the party had dropped Ghulam Nabi Azad’s close associate Ghulam Ahmed Mir from the president of Jammu and Kashmir. Sources said that Azad was not happy after stepping down of his close aide from chief of the party’s state unit.
