Centre issues notification to merge three MCDs

Minutes before the announcement of the MCD elections on March 9, the State Election Commissioner (SEC) of Delhi had postponed the MCD polls as it received a communication from the Centre seeking suggestions on conducting the elections for a unified corporation.

Three municipal corporations of Delhi (MCDs) will be a unified body from May 22

New Delhi: Three municipal corporations of Delhi (MCDs) will be a unified body from May 22 as the Ministry of Home Affairs on Wednesday issued a notification to make these bodies into a single entity. As per the Delhi Municipal Corporation (Amendment) Act, 2022, MHA will appoint a special officer to look after day-to-day activities on the merged body till the first meeting of the body takes place.

The notification says, “In exercise of the powers conferred by sub-section (1) of section 3 of the Delhi Municipal Corporation (Amendment) Act, 2022 (10 of 2022), the Central Government hereby appoints the 22nd day of May, 2022, on which the Municipal Corporation of Delhi shall be constituted.”

Minutes before the announcement of the MCD elections on March 9, the State Election Commissioner (SEC) of Delhi had postponed the MCD polls as it received a communication from the Centre seeking suggestions on conducting the elections for a unified corporation.

The development came after 10 years when, in 2012, the then Chief Minister Sheila Dixit had trifurcated the erstwhile MCD into three parts citing reasons related to good governance. The MCDs, however, reported shortage of funds in day-to-day running and various sections started demanding their unification. There are 104 wards each in the North and the South DMCs while the EDMC has 64 wards.

On March 25, Union Home Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai had proposed the Delhi Municipal Corporation (Amendment) Bill, 2022 in Lok Sabha. Later on April 5, Rajya Sabha also passed the Delhi Municipal Corporation (Amendment) Bill-2022 to unify the three civic bodies in the national capital.
