Veteran Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad had on August 17 resigned from the post of chairman of Congress Committee of the state.
New Delhi: In another sign of ‘revolt’ in the Congress after resignation of veteran party leader Ghulam Nabi Azad, another senior leader Anand Sharma on Sunday resigned from the chief of the ‘steering committee’ of the party’s Himachal Pradesh unit. Sharma said that he has been given the continuing exclusion and insults, as a self-respecting person he has left with no choice. Sharma is deputy leader of the Congress in Rajya Sabha.
The leader, who comes from hill state Himachal Pradesh, wrote a letter to party president Sonia Gandhi informing the decision to quit the post which was given him in April this year by the party’s high command. His decision to resign from the post is a jolt for the party ahead of Himachal Pradesh assembly elections and 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
Shrama, in his letter, said, “I have resigned with a heavy heart from the Chairmanship of the Steering Committee of the Congress for the Himachal Elections. Reiterating that I am a lifelong congressman and remain firm on my convictions.”
He further added that, “Committed to Congress ideology that runs in my blood, let there be no doubts about this! However, given the continuing exclusion and insults, as a self-respecting person- I was left with no choice.” However, he told her that he will continue to campaign for the party candidates in the state.
Veteran Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad had on August 17 resigned from the post of chairman of Congress Committee of the state. Azad, former Chief Minister of the erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir state, was stepped down from the post hours after his appointment by central leadership of the party.
Azad had submitted his resignation from the key post as he saw the appointments as a demotion for him. He is already a member of the party’s strong body all-India political affairs committee (PAC). The Congress sources, however, has claimed that Azad refused to take charge as chairman of Congress campaign committee chairman due to health reasons.

Azad has held many key positions in the past in Centre and erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir state. He has served as Union Minister in the Centre earlier. The leader, however, has been facing heat as he is among the 23 leaders who had written an letter to the Congress president Sonia Gandhi demanding restructuring of organisational structure of the party.
The Congress party has been facing internal heat since the letter to make organisational changes was written by a group of 23 leaders. These leaders have been demanding change in leadership to strengthen its fight in coming elections. The move of G 23 leaders, however, was opposed by those who are loyal to the Gandhi family. Even these leaders were alleged as rebellion in the party who have been damaging the party with very much intension.
