Days after a Mumbai doctor discovered a human finger in an ice cream cone, police have made significant progress in identifying its origin. Investigations revealed that an employee at the Pune factory of Yummo ice cream suffered a finger injury in an accident.
Police sources indicate that the ice cream containing the finger was packaged on the same day as the incident. DNA tests are being conducted to confirm whether the finger belongs to the injured staff member.
The incident, which has sparked serious concerns over food safety standards, came to light when 26-year-old Dr Orlem Brandon Serrao found the finger in an ice cream his sister had ordered online.
A photo circulating online vividly showed a human finger embedded in an ice cream, sparking widespread outrage and disgust. The woman promptly rushed to the Malad police station to file a complaint and handed over the contaminated ice cream.
“After eating half of it, I felt a solid piece in my mouth. I thought it could be a nut or a chocolate piece and spat it out to check what it was,” Dr. Serrao recounted. “I am a doctor, so I know how body parts look like. When I carefully examined it, I noticed the nails and fingerprint impressions. It resembled a thumb. I am traumatized,” he added.

Following Dr. Serrao’s police complaint, a case was filed against Yummo on charges of food adulteration and endangering human life. In response, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) suspended the license of the manufacturer supplying ice cream to Yummo. “The premises of the ice cream manufacturer have been inspected by a team from FSSAI’s Western Region Office, and its license has been suspended,” the regulator announced.
The discovery of the finger in the food item has also led to suspicions of a more serious crime, prompting police to explore all possible angles in their investigation.
