Denmark has issued a recall on several spicy ramen noodle products produced by the South Korean company Samyang, citing concerns over potentially hazardous levels of capsaicin.
The recall affects three varieties from Samyang’s instant ramen line: Buldak 3x Spicy & Hot Chicken, 2x Spicy & Hot Chicken, and Hot Chicken Stew. Denmark’s food agency initiated the recall and issued a warning on Tuesday, advising consumers to refrain from consuming the products.
However, Samyang asserts that there are no quality issues with the food. In a statement to the BBC, the company clarified, “We understand that the Danish food authority recalled the products, not because of a problem in their quality but because they were too spicy.” This marks the first instance of the products being recalled for their spiciness.
It remains unclear whether any specific incidents in Denmark prompted authorities to take action. The Danish Veterinary and Food Administration reported that the levels of capsaicin in a single packet were deemed high enough to pose a risk of acute poisoning to consumers.
The agency urged individuals in possession of the recalled products to either discard them or return them to the store of purchase. Additionally, it emphasised the potential harm spicy food can pose to children.

The recall has sparked widespread online discussion, particularly among spicy food enthusiasts. Many have shared humorous reactions, with some attributing the recall to Danes’ purported low tolerance for spice.
Samyang has announced plans to review local regulations in Denmark and respond accordingly. Notably, the noodles have not been recalled in any other country, nor have there been safety warnings issued elsewhere.
