In a recent exclusive interview with NDTV, KC Tyagi, a key leader of the Janata Dal (United) (JDU), disclosed that Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar was offered the prime ministerial post by the Opposition INDIA bloc following the announcement of the Lok Sabha election results. Tyagi’s statements came amidst swirling speculations suggesting the INDIA bloc’s efforts to lure Nitish Kumar back into their alliance, aiming to thwart the NDA from clinching a historic third term in government.
However, Tyagi clarified that the JDU has firmly rebuffed all such offers from the opposition and remains steadfast in their commitment to collaborate with the NDA for the ensuing five years. He underscored Kumar’s unequivocal support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, asserting that it dispelled any lingering doubts regarding the party’s allegiance. Tyagi lamented the treatment meted out to Kumar by the Congress and its allies, which ultimately compelled the JDU to chart an independent course.
The veteran politician emphasized Bihar’s dire need for special status, highlighting the state’s developmental challenges exacerbated by the partition of resources during the creation of Jharkhand. Tyagi contended that Bihar’s progress hinges on securing special status, crucial for addressing issues of unemployment, poverty, and migration plaguing the region.
Speculation about a potential reunion between Nitish Kumar and the INDIA bloc surfaced amid indications of the BJP’s inability to secure an outright majority of 272 seats. Senior leaders from the INDIA bloc, including former Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, hinted at extending an olive branch to Kumar. However, sources close to Nitish Kumar swiftly dispelled any such notion, underscoring his commitment to the NDA.

Lalan Singh, an elected Member of Parliament from Munger, Bihar, and Ram Nath Thakur, a Rajya Sabha MP, are poised to assume significant roles in the new administration. Notably, Ram Nath Thakur is the son of the late Bharat Ratna awardee Karpoori Thakur.
As the political landscape continues to evolve, Nitish Kumar’s unwavering commitment to the NDA underscores the stability of the coalition government amidst shifting alliances and speculations.
