Chirag Paswan, the leader of Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), has voiced his support for a review of the Agniveer scheme and a nationwide caste census. These positions align with demands made by the Janata Dal (United), another National Democratic Alliance (NDA) ally.
Paswan’s statements come after his party’s impressive performance in the Lok Sabha elections, where they won all five seats they contested.
In an exclusive interview with the NDTV, Chirag Paswan attributed his party’s success to the people of Bihar and expressed his commitment to continuing his father’s legacy.
Ram Vilas Paswan, a significant figure in Indian politics, passed away in 2020, leaving Chirag Paswan to navigate challenging political terrain. Despite setbacks, including losing the party’s name and symbol, Chirag Paswan has managed to re-establish his political foothold, with the BJP recognising his importance for securing Paswan votes in Bihar.
Chirag Paswan emphasised the importance of promoting young leaders within his party and pointed to the inclusion of 25-year-old Shambhavi Choudhary among the LJP’s MPs as evidence of this commitment. He critiqued other political parties for their reluctance to promote younger faces, attributing it to insecurities within their ranks.

Regarding the Agniveer scheme, Chirag Paswan stressed the need for a review, noting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s openness to discussions. The scheme, which recruits young individuals into the armed forces for a short-term period, has faced criticism for potentially leaving participants unemployed at a young age and affecting military cohesion. Paswan suggested that these issues be revisited after the government formation is complete.
Chirag Paswan also supported the call for a nationwide caste census, arguing that the government should have this data, though he expressed reservations about making it public due to the potential for increased social divides.
Discussing the potential allocation of ministerial roles in the new government, Paswan deferred to the Prime Minister’s prerogative, stating it was not his primary concern. He also dismissed speculation about the LJP switching sides to the opposition INDIA bloc, reaffirming his commitment to the NDA and Prime Minister Modi.

Paswan’s backing of JDU’s demands marks a significant development, given the historical friction between LJP and JDU. However, the two parties have reconciled, with Paswan recently meeting Nitish Kumar to congratulate him on their electoral success.
This unity within the NDA is crucial as they navigate the distribution of key ministries and roles in the new government, with the swearing-in ceremony expected soon.
Overall, Chirag Paswan’s stance on these critical issues highlights his strategic positioning within the NDA and his efforts to uphold his father’s legacy while addressing the contemporary challenges facing his party and constituency.
