The BJP’s remarkable performance in West Bengal during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, where it secured 18 out of 42 seats, appears not to have been an anomaly. According to the exit polls, the party is poised to perform even better this year. In a significant blow to the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC), at least four exit polls indicate that the BJP will emerge as the single-largest party in the state in terms of Lok Sabha seats. In 2019, the TMC had won 22 constituencies.
Exit polls predict the following seat distributions for the BJP and TMC in West Bengal:
Jan Ki Baat: BJP 21-26 seats, TMC 16-18 seats.
India News-D-Dynamics: BJP 21 seats, TMC 19 seats.
Republic Bharat-Matrize: BJP 21-25 seats, TMC 16-20 seats.
R Bangla: BJP 22 seats, TMC 18 seats.
The Congress is expected to perform poorly again, with predictions ranging from 0 to 2 seats, mirroring its 2019 performance. Jan Ki Baat suggests the Congress might win 0-2 constituencies, India News-D-Dynamics forecasts 2 seats, and Republic Bharat-Matrize predicts 0-1 seats. The R Bangla poll projects that the Congress will fail to secure any seats.

The BJP’s expected success comes despite a major setback in the 2021 Assembly elections, where it won only 77 out of 294 seats, far short of its target of at least 200. Since then, the party has intensified its efforts in West Bengal, focusing on alleged corruption within the TMC and accusations against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s party of Muslim appeasement.
A major turning point for the BJP this year was the controversy in Sandeshkhali, where women accused a TMC strongman, Sheikh Shahjahan, and his aides of sexual assault. Despite the TMC’s denial and allegations that the women were paid to make false claims, the BJP leveraged the incident as a key election issue, which seems to have resonated with voters.
Nationally, the exit polls show a strong performance for the BJP-led NDA across various states, with the coalition predicted to secure significant victories. In the broader context of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the NDA is expected to win a substantial number of seats, solidifying its position for a third consecutive term under Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
