2 South Korean planes collide mid-air, 3 killed: Report

Seoul: Two planes of the South Korean Air Force collided mid-air Friday, said reports. According to the authorities, the crash took place near the KT-1 aircrafts base in the southeastern city of Sacheon at about 1:35 pm (0435 GMT).

As per the initial media reports, three persons were killed while one person has suffered injuries.

Emergency officials recovered the bodies and rescued one pilot with injuries, said officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity. Soon after the crash, three helicopters, 20 vehicles and over 30 firefighters and rescuers were pressed into action.

The South Korean Air Force said in a statement that it was trying to ascertain the exact number of casualties as well as whether the pilots of the two aircraft had tried to eject to safety. The authorities have reportedly been checking deaths. The KT-1 trainer aircraft that was involved in the collision can seat two people.
