Russia Nuclear Drill: In a significant escalation amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, Russia nuclear forces commenced a special military exercise today, following directives from President Vladimir Putin. This development occurs at a crucial juncture, as senior officials in Moscow describe the situation as entering its “most difficult phase.”

This exercise marks the second military drill ordered by Putin in just two weeks, raising concerns within the NATO alliance regarding how to respond to the increasingly volatile situation. The tension escalated after the U.S. and other Western nations considered allowing Ukraine to utilize long-range cruise missiles, potentially enabling attacks on deep Russian territory.

The Kremlin has issued a stark warning, indicating that if Ukraine, with Western support, were to proceed with such military actions, Russia might resort to the use of nuclear weapons to defend its homeland. Putin has emphasized that Russia’s updated nuclear doctrine, approved last month, permits the use of nuclear arms against non-nuclear states, framing it as a warning to Western powers.

During the launch of the nuclear drill, Putin stated, “We will work out the actions of officials to control the use of nuclear weapons with practical launches of ballistic and cruise missiles.” He further characterized the potential use of nuclear weapons as an “extremely exceptional measure” while asserting the necessity of maintaining readiness.

In a response to growing military activity, NATO condemned reports of North Korean troops being deployed to western Russia to support operations in Ukraine. The Pentagon estimates that approximately 10,000 North Korean soldiers are being sent to eastern Russia, with Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky suggesting that the actual number could exceed 12,000. Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary Sabrina Singh expressed concern that these troops may soon engage in combat near Ukraine.

Putin has insisted that Russia’s defense strategies are its own prerogative, indicating that should Ukraine choose to align with NATO, Russia reserves the right to respond as it sees fit. As the drill continues, fears of potential nuclear conflict loom large, especially following a recent similar exercise in the Tver region, northwest of Moscow, which featured Yars Inter-Continental Ballistic Missiles capable of reaching the U.S.

As the world’s largest nuclear power, Russia, along with the United States, controls a substantial portion of global nuclear armaments. Both leaders, Putin and U.S. President Joe Biden, have acknowledged the risk of a direct confrontation between Russia and NATO escalating into a global conflict. Former President Donald Trump has also voiced concerns regarding the possibility of nuclear warfare amidst rising geopolitical tensions.

Putin concluded with a call for modern and readily deployable strategic forces to counter emerging threats, underscoring the gravity of the current geopolitical landscape. The Pentagon reaffirmed that the U.S. will not impose limitations on Ukraine’s use of American weapons in response to North Korea’s involvement in the conflict.
