A tragic accident occurred on the Lucknow-Agra Expressway in Uttar Pradesh’s Unnao, where a double-decker bus collided with a milk tanker, resulting in the deaths of at least 18 persons and injuries to 19 others.

The double decker bus was traveling from Sitamarhi, Bihar, to Delhi when it rammed into the tanker at around 5:15 am. The collision’s impact was severe, causing passengers to be flung out of the vehicle, with visuals from the scene showing bodies on the ground, twisted metal, shattered glass, and destroyed belongings.

Among the deceased were three women and one child. The injured were promptly taken to a hospital for treatment. District Magistrate Gaurang Rathi confirmed the casualty figures and the ongoing medical care for the injured.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed his sorrow over the incident and instructed officials to ensure proper treatment for the injured. He took to X and wrote, “The loss of life in a road accident in Unnao district is extremely sad and heart-wrenching. My condolences are with the bereaved family. District administration officials have been instructed to reach the spot and speed up the relief work. I pray to Lord Shri Ram to give a place to the departed souls in his feet and provide speedy recovery to the injured.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced compensation of Rs 2 lakh for the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for those injured.

President Droupadi Murmu also extended her condolences, expressing deep sympathy for the victims’ families and wishing a speedy recovery for the injured.

This tragic event has highlighted the ongoing concerns regarding road safety on India’s highways, prompting responses from top officials and underscoring the need for enhanced measures to prevent such accidents in the future.
