Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal staged a symbolic protest on Saturday outside the residence of Delhi Chief Minister Atishi, highlighting alleged water contamination issues in areas like Dwarka and Sagarpur.

Maliwal, a member of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), carried a bottle of dark, polluted water to emphasize the issue and gave the government a 15-day ultimatum to resolve the water supply crisis.

A Protest Against Contaminated Water

Maliwal, claiming the water sample was taken from an army officer’s residence in Dwarka, warned that if the problem persists, she would escalate her protest by delivering a tanker of contaminated water to the chief minister. “This black water is just a sample of what the people of Delhi are forced to drink,” she remarked, calling on Atishi to prioritize water quality.

The issue has sparked a new round of accusations between the AAP and BJP. Vinay Mishra, AAP MLA and Vice Chairman of the Delhi Jal Board (DJB), accused the BJP of deliberately obstructing DJB operations. According to Mishra, the BJP’s interference has impacted essential services, including pensions, salaries, and mohalla clinics. He vowed that the AAP government, under Arvind Kejriwal, would work rapidly to address the city’s water and sewer issues.

Upcoming Challenges and Concerns

The protest comes amid the festive season, with Chhath Puja approaching, a time when clean water is crucial for celebrations. Maliwal emphasized the urgency of the issue, stating, “Who can stay alive after drinking this water?”

The Delhi Jal Board has faced scrutiny in recent years, with AAP and BJP exchanging blame over water quality issues in the city. As the water crisis in Delhi becomes a focal point of debate, residents await swift action from both the government and the Delhi Jal Board to provide safe drinking water.
