The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), probing the rape and murder of a woman doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, has found a key document that may establish a connection between former principal Sandip Ghosh and attempts to tamper with the crime scene.

The document, dated August 10, shows Sandip Ghosh giving instructions to the Public Works Department (PWD) for renovation work in areas adjacent to where the victim’s body was discovered.

The victim’s body was recovered on August 9 from the seminar room within the hospital premises. Just a day later, Ghosh signed off on the renovation of a nearby room and toilet, adjacent to the seminar hall where the crime took place. This move has raised serious suspicions about attempts to potentially destroy evidence related to the case.

Initially, it was thought that a lower-ranking administrative official had directed the PWD to carry out the renovations under Ghosh’s orders.

However, the CBI’s investigation revealed that Sandip Ghosh personally issued the permission letter for the work, showing his eagerness to have the renovation done, sources said.

On August 13, hours after the Calcutta High Court transferred the investigation from the Kolkata Police to the CBI, PWD workers attempted to start the renovation. However, student protests within the hospital premises halted the work, raising further suspicion.

Investigators now believe that Ghosh’s push for the renovation could establish a link between two ongoing investigations—the first into the rape and murder case, and the second into financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College, for which Ghosh is currently in CBI custody.

Students and medical professionals protesting the case have voiced concerns that the murder may not have been an isolated incident. They speculate that the victim was killed because she had uncovered evidence related to financial irregularities at the hospital, a claim that has further complicated the investigation.

The CBI is continuing its probe into both the murder and the alleged corruption at the institution.
