Lok Sabha Elections: A chance encounter between Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and his rival Tejashwi Yadav on a Vistara flight from Patna to Delhi has sparked widespread speculation, especially as critical power negotiations dominate meetings in the capital involving the BJP-led NDA and the opposition INDIA bloc.
The two leaders were photographed sitting in consecutive window seats in the eight-seat business section of the flight on Tuesday morning. The image went viral well before the flight landed in Delhi, capturing the attention of political observers and the public alike.
Optics and Conversations
The optics of this encounter were particularly significant for Nitish Kumar, who, after a history of political flip-flops, is now one of the two main allies supporting Narendra Modi’s third government. Despite the NDA winning a third consecutive term in the national election, the BJP fell short of a majority in the Lok Sabha with 240 seats.
Sources indicate that soon after the flight took off, Nitish Kumar turned to Tejashwi Yadav and initiated a conversation. The Bihar Chief Minister reportedly showed his inked index finger to Tejashwi and asked, “What about you?” Tejashwi responded by displaying his own inked finger.

Nitish then urged Tejashwi to join him, leading to a seat swap facilitated by retired bureaucrat Shishir Sinha, who was traveling with Nitish. Tejashwi, who was originally seated with RJD Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Yadav, sat next to Nitish Kumar for almost an hour.
“There was no political discussion,” sources claimed. Tejashwi later told reporters, “We greeted each other. I was allotted the seat behind him, but he saw me and called me to sit with him.”
Separate Meetings and Speculations
Neither Nitish Kumar nor Tejashwi Yadav disclosed the details of their in-flight conversation, leaving room for various theories as each attended separate meetings in Delhi.
On Wednesday evening, Nitish Kumar participated in an NDA meeting, pledging support to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP while continuing negotiations on ministries and other demands made by the Janata Dal United (JDU).
