West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced a protest demanding justice for the Kolkata trainee doctor who was tragically raped and murdered at the city’s RG Kar College and Hospital. The Chief Minister urged the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which has taken over the investigation from Kolkata Police, to “ensure justice within next Sunday.”

Mamata Banerjee, also the Trinamool Congress chief, revealed plans for a rally from Moulali to Dharmatala in Kolkata on August 17. Expressing her anger, she stated, “I want the accused to be hanged. I hope the CBI will give justice within next Sunday.”

On August 12, she had warned the police that the case would be transferred to the CBI if they failed to solve it by Sunday, August 18. However, the Calcutta High Court intervened on Tuesday and handed over the investigation to the CBI following the victim’s parents’ plea for an independent probe.

During a party event earlier in the day, Banerjee accused the opposition BJP and CPI(M) of running a malicious campaign against her government.

She defended her administration, saying, “What have we not done? What action did we not take? As soon as I came to know of the incident, I spoke to the police commissioner and spoke to the parents (of the woman).”

She criticized the opposition for “indulging in cheap politics” instead of supporting the victim’s family, adding, “They think they can do a Bangladesh here. But let me tell you, I am not greedy for power.” Banerjee reiterated her commitment to ensuring that the rapist would be hanged, telling the victim’s parents, “And I stick to it.”
