With the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) falling short of a majority in the Lok Sabha, its National Democratic Alliance (NDA) allies have started intense negotiations for key ministerial positions in the central government.
In a recent NDA meeting, coalition veterans like N Chandrababu Naidu of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and Nitish Kumar of the Janata Dal (United) (JDU) have reportedly laid out their demands, though no official details have been released yet.
TDP’s Demands
N Chandrababu Naidu’s TDP, which secured 16 Lok Sabha seats and achieved a sweeping victory in the Andhra Pradesh Assembly polls, is speculated to be demanding five ministerial positions. This includes a Minister of State post for Finance and the prestigious Lok Sabha Speaker’s post. The TDP is also eyeing portfolios such as Roads, Panchayati Raj, Health, and Education.
JDU’s Expectations
The JDU, with 12 MPs in the Lok Sabha, is seeking two Cabinet positions and one Minister of State role. Party sources indicate a strong interest in the Railways Ministry.

Additionally, the Nitish Kumar-led party may advocate for a Common Minimum Programme (CMP) for the new NDA government and a coordination committee to ensure its implementation. Nitish Kumar is seen as a suitable candidate to lead this committee, a role reminiscent of George Fernandes during the Atal Bihari Vajpayee regime.
JDS and Other Allies
The Janata Dal (Secular) (JDS), which has won two seats, is likely to request a central ministerial role for its leader and MP HD Kumaraswamy, with a particular interest in the Agriculture Ministry. The Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, holding seven seats, and Chirag Paswan’s Lok Janshakti Party (LJP), with five seats, are also expected to seek significant positions.

It remains unclear if Pawan Kalyan’s Jana Sena, which has won two seats, will pursue a central role. Apna Dal (Sonelal) leader Anupriya Patel, a minister in the previous Modi governments, may face uncertainty as her party’s tally has reduced to one seat from two in 2019.
BJP’s Numbers and NDA’s Majority
The BJP has won 240 seats, falling 32 seats short of the 272 required for a majority in the Lok Sabha. With the TDP and JDU together holding 28 seats, and additional support from other allies, the NDA is expected to surpass the majority mark.
Opposition Response
Meanwhile, the INDIA Opposition bloc has secured 232 seats. Leaders of the bloc met in Delhi to strategize their next steps. Addressing the media post-meeting, Mallikarjun Kharge expressed gratitude to the electorate for their support and criticized the BJP for its alleged politics of hate and corruption. Kharge emphasized the bloc’s commitment to defending the Constitution, tackling issues like price rise and unemployment, and fighting against what he termed as the BJP’s fascist rule under Narendra Modi.
“We will take appropriate steps at the appropriate time to realize the people’s desire not to be ruled by BJP’s government,” Kharge asserted, pledging that the INDIA bloc would honor its promises to the people.
As the BJP and its allies negotiate for power, and the Opposition plans its counter-moves, the political landscape in India remains dynamic and unpredictable.
