In a significant indication that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s third term will differ from the previous two, a senior leader from the Janata Dal (United) (JDU) has announced the party’s intention to seek a review of the Centre’s Agniveer scheme for recruitment in the armed forces.
KC Tyagi, the chief spokesperson for the BJP’s ally JDU and a close aide to its chief Nitish Kumar, highlighted growing discontent with the scheme across several states.
“There is resentment, so we will seek a review of Agniveer. We are not opposing it,” Tyagi clarified, noting the party’s stance is aimed at addressing concerns rather than outright opposition.
In addition to calling for a review of the Agniveer scheme, Tyagi emphasized the need for a nationwide caste survey and the granting of special status to Bihar.
What is Agniveer scheme
The Agniveer Scheme is an Indian military recruitment initiative introduced to modernize the armed forces. It aims to recruit young individuals, termed “Agniveers,” for a four-year service tenure, offering them training and experience in the defense sector.
The scheme focuses on enhancing operational readiness while providing youth with skills and employment. After completing their service, Agniveers receive financial packages and priority in certain government jobs. This programme seeks to balance maintaining a youthful military profile with broader socio-economic benefits, fostering patriotism, discipline, and employment opportunities among India’s youth.

The push for a nationwide caste survey aligns with a major campaign promise of the INDIA Opposition bloc, which includes the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and Congress. Notably, the Nitish Kumar-led government, supported by the RJD and Congress before rejoining the NDA, had already conducted a caste survey in Bihar.
These demands from the JDU signal a potential shift in the Modi government’s policy priorities, reflecting the influence and concerns of its coalition partners. As negotiations continue within the NDA, the emphasis on addressing regional grievances and socio-economic issues will likely shape the agenda of Modi’s third term in office.
