According to reports, the Israel-Hamas ceasefire has begun even as a demand by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s demand for the names of the hostages to be released delayed the commencement. The historic moment was set to take effect at 6:30 AM GMT (8:30 AM local time in Gaza). However, the ceasefire was delayed by nearly three hours.
As part of the ceasefire, Israeli forces began withdrawing from Gaza’s Rafah to the Philadelphi corridor, which borders Egypt and Gaza. This withdrawal marks the initial phase of a three-part agreement mediated by the United States, Qatar, and Egypt. The 15-month-long conflict has claimed nearly 47,000 Palestinian lives, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.
Despite the ceasefire agreement, tensions remain high. Israeli airstrikes reportedly continued in Gaza, with the Gaza Health Ministry reporting over 70 fatalities due to post-deal strikes. Israel has accused Hamas of failing to adhere to certain terms of the agreement.
Key Points of the Israel-Hamas Ceasefire Deal
Hostage Exchange: The first phase of the ceasefire, beginning on Sunday, will last six weeks. It involves the release of 33 out of 98 remaining hostages held by Hamas. These include women, children, elderly men over 50, and individuals who are ill or wounded. In exchange, Israel will release approximately 2,000 Palestinian prisoners and detainees.
On Sunday, three female Israeli hostages will be freed through the Red Cross in exchange for 30 Hamas prisoners.
Four more female hostages will be released after seven days, with three additional hostages freed every subsequent week.
Military Movements: During the first phase, Israeli forces will vacate specific positions in northern Gaza, allowing displaced Palestinians to return to their homes in these areas.
Statements from Leadership: Prime Minister Netanyahu’s comments underscore the fragile nature of the agreement. He stated, “We reserve the right to resume the war if necessary, with American support.”
Diplomatic Efforts and Context
The ceasefire was negotiated with significant involvement from the United States and Qatar. The timing of the agreement coincides with the upcoming inauguration of US President-elect Donald Trump on January 20. Trump’s administration, along with Republican leaders, had warned Hamas of severe consequences if hostages were not promptly released. Trump himself had called for an expedited ceasefire agreement.
The Israel-Hamas ceasefire represents a critical step towards ending a prolonged conflict that has devastated Gaza. However, with both sides accusing each other of violating terms and the volatile situation on the ground, the sustainability of this agreement remains uncertain. The coming weeks will be crucial in determining whether this ceasefire can hold or if the region will face renewed hostilities.
