With just two weeks before his inauguration, U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has sparked controversy by threatening to use “economic force” to make Canada the 51st state of the United States.

Speaking at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida on Tuesday, Trump outlined ambitious and contentious expansionist plans, including renaming the Gulf of Mexico and increasing NATO defense spending.

Making Canada the 51st U.S. State

Trump reiterated his longstanding proposal to absorb Canada into the U.S., an idea he first floated after meeting Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau following his November 2024 election win.

When asked if he would consider military action to achieve this goal, Trump dismissed the notion. “No, economic force. Because Canada and the U.S., that would really be something,” he said.

Trump emphasized the removal of the U.S.-Canada border, describing it as an “artificially drawn line” and suggesting it would improve national security. Criticizing American spending on Canadian goods and defense, he claimed Washington “derives no benefits” from its relationship with Ottawa.

The proposal has been met with derision in Canada. Trudeau, who recently resigned as prime minister, tweeted, “There isn’t a snowball’s chance in hell that Canada would become part of the United States.”

Foreign Minister Melanie Joly called Trump’s comments a “complete lack of understanding of what makes Canada a strong country,” adding, “We will never back down in the face of threats.”

Plans for Panama Canal and Greenland

Trump also refused to rule out military action to reclaim the Panama Canal and acquire Greenland from Denmark. Labeling the Panama Canal vital for U.S. economic security, Trump criticized late President Jimmy Carter for ceding control of the waterway to Panama.

Panama’s Foreign Minister Javier Martinez-Acha rejected the remarks, stating, “The only hands that control the canal are Panamanian and that’s how it will continue to be.”

Meanwhile, Denmark dismissed Trump’s suggestion to buy Greenland, with Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stating, “I don’t think it’s a good way forward to fight each other with financial means when we are close allies and partners.”

Renaming the Gulf of Mexico

At the same press conference, Trump announced plans to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America.”

“It has a beautiful ring. That covers a lot of territory. The Gulf of America. What a beautiful name. And it’s appropriate,” Trump said.

This renaming proposal recalls Trump’s earlier call to revert the name of Denali, North America’s highest peak, to Mount McKinley.

NATO and Middle East Policies

Continuing his critique of NATO members, Trump demanded an increase in defense spending to 5 percent of GDP, up from the current 2 percent target. “They can all afford it,” he said, pressing allies to contribute more.

Trump also warned of severe repercussions if Hamas does not release the remaining hostages abducted during its 2023 war against Israel. “All hell will break out in the Middle East,” he vowed, setting a deadline for action before his January 20 inauguration.

Global Reactions

Trump’s bold proposals have drawn mixed reactions worldwide. Critics argue that his policies could strain international alliances and provoke economic and geopolitical tensions. Supporters, however, see them as a reflection of his commitment to an assertive and nationalist agenda.

As Trump prepares to take office, his expansionist rhetoric signals a turbulent start to his presidency, raising questions about the future of U.S. relations with key global partners.
