A Low Pressure Area hovering over the Southwest and adjoining Westcentral Bay of Bengal has shown signs of intensifying, raising concerns of a potential cyclonic storm formation. Named cyclone Remal by Oman, the system is anticipated to develop further and pose a threat to coastal regions.
As of 0830 hrs IST on May 23, 2024, the disturbance had shifted northeastwards, evolving into a Well Marked Low Pressure Area over Westcentral and adjoining South Bay of Bengal.
A cyclone is likely to develop in the Bay of Bengal in the coming days and approach the coasts of Bangladesh and West Bengal, India.

Cyclone Remal projected path
The IMD predicted the trajectory of cyclone Remal to continue northeastward, concentrating into a Depression over central parts of the Bay of Bengal by the morning of May 24. Subsequently, it’s expected to intensify into a Cyclonic Storm over Eastcentral Bay of Bengal by May 25, potentially reaching Severe Cyclonic Storm status as it approaches the coasts of Bangladesh and West Bengal by May 26 evening.
Effects of cyclone Remal
Authorities have issued heavy rainfall warnings for several regions. Coastal districts of West Bengal and adjoining areas of North Odisha are anticipated to experience light to moderate rainfall, with isolated places expecting heavy to very heavy rainfall on May 26 and 27. Similarly, Mizoram, Tripura, and South Manipur are also bracing for heavy rainfall during the same period.
In terms of wind speed, squally weather with speeds reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph is predicted over central and adjoining South Bay of Bengal on May 23.
This is expected to intensify, reaching 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph over central Bay of Bengal on May 24. By May 25 morning, gale-force winds with speeds of 60-70 kmph gusting to 80 kmph are anticipated in adjoining areas of North Bay of Bengal.
The wind speed is forecast to increase significantly, with speeds reaching 100-110 kmph gusting to 120 kmph over North Bay of Bengal and 70-80 kmph gusting to 90 kmph over adjoining central Bay of Bengal from May 26th morning for the subsequent 24 hours.
Squally winds are also expected along the coasts of Bangladesh, West Bengal, and adjoining North Odisha from May 25th evening.
Sea conditions due to cyclone Remal
Sea conditions are forecast to deteriorate, with rough to very rough seas expected over central and adjoining South Bay of Bengal from May 23. This will extend to North Bay of Bengal from May 24 evening, becoming high over central Bay of Bengal from May 25 morning and reaching High to Very High over North Bay of Bengal from May 25 evening till May 27 morning. Similar conditions are expected along the coasts of Bangladesh, West Bengal, and adjoining North Odisha from May 25 evening till May 27 morning.
In light of these forecasts, fishermen have been advised to exercise caution. They were urged not to venture into the south Bay of Bengal until May 24, the central Bay of Bengal until May 26, and the North Bay of Bengal from May 24 onwards until the morning of May 27. Fishermen currently at sea were advised to return to the coast immediately.
As authorities monitor the situation closely, residents of coastal areas were urged to stay updated with the latest weather advisories and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety in the face of the potential impact of Cyclone Remal.
