Chris Martin, the frontman of the renowned British band Coldplay, has announced that the group may retire from recording new music after their 12th album. In a recent interview with Zane Lowe for Apple Music, Martin revealed the band’s decision to limit their discography, signaling a potential end to new albums.
“We are only going to do 12 proper albums and that’s real. Yeah, I promise,” said Martin, jokingly adding, “Less is more. For some of our critics, even less would be even more!” The singer emphasized the importance of setting a limit, citing it as a means to ensure quality control for their future releases.
Coldplay is currently promoting their 10th album, Moon Music, which is scheduled for release on October 4, 2024. The band has two more albums left to record before calling it quits on new projects.
Martin explained that the decision to cap Coldplay’s music catalogue was inspired by some of the band’s biggest musical influences. “There are only seven Harry Potters. There’s only 12 and a half Beatles’ albums, there’s about the same for Bob Marley,” he noted, suggesting that a finite number of albums could help maintain the band’s artistic integrity.

The singer also reflected on the effort that goes into producing an album, stating, “To make an album great as a band, it’s such a lot of wrangling of people, and I want to give the others some of their lives for themselves.” He added that limiting their output would help the band members balance their personal and professional lives.
This news comes after Martin’s earlier statements in 2021, where he hinted at Coldplay’s plan to release their final album by 2025. However, the band may continue touring and performing live, with the possibility of collaborative work in the future. “Maybe we’ll do some collaborative things, but the Coldplay catalogue, as it were, finishes then,” he said.
Fans of Coldplay can look forward to the band’s return to India in January 2025, where they are scheduled to perform on January 18, 19, and 21 in Mumbai. This will be the band’s first appearance in India since their last performance at the Global Citizen Festival in 2016.
Coldplay, consisting of Chris Martin (vocals and piano), Jonny Buckland (guitar), Guy Berryman (bass), and Will Champion (drums and percussion), has been a dominant force in the global music scene. Managed by Phil Harvey, the band’s legacy spans numerous chart-topping albums and unforgettable performances.
