In a significant victory, the Opposition INDIA alliance has emerged triumphant in the by-elections for 13 Assembly seats across seven states, winning 10 seats. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which recently secured a third consecutive term in the Lok Sabha polls, managed to claim just two seats.
The by-elections saw participation from key INDIA bloc parties, including the Congress, Trinamool Congress (TMC), Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). The elections were held on Wednesday in Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, and Tamil Nadu.

In Punjab, AAP’s Mohinder Bhagat won the Jalandhar West seat by over 23,000 votes. In West Bengal, TMC candidates won all the four constituencies that saw polling.
Himachal Pradesh saw Kamlesh Thakur, wife of Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, making her electoral debut and winning the Dehra seat. The Congress won the Nalagarh seat, while BJP’s Ashish Sharma clinched the Hamirpur seat.

In Tamil Nadu, DMK’s Anniyur Siva won the Vikravandi assembly seat.
In Uttarakhand, Congress candidates won both the Badrinath and Manglaur seats. In Madhya Pradesh, BJP’s Kamslesh Pratap Shahi won from the Amarwara seat. In Bihar, JD(U)’s Kaladhar Prasad Mandal trailed behind Independent candidate Shankar Singhin the Rupauli seat who won the seat.
The counting of votes for these 13 legislative assembly seats began on Saturday morning, following the voting held on Wednesday.
These by-elections were the first since the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, where the BJP won 240 seats, falling 32 seats short of a majority. The NDA, however, crossed the halfway mark with a total of 293 seats, while the Congress-led INDIA bloc secured 232 seats.
