Deepak Sharma, an executive committee member of the All India Football Federation (AIFF), has been arrested by Goa police following allegations of physically assaulting two women players participating in the Indian Women’s Football League (IWL) second division, a news agency reported.
The incident occurred at a hotel in Goa on the night of March 28, where the women players were staying.
The two footballers, representing Khad FC from Himachal Pradesh, accused Deepak Sharma of the AIFF, who is also the owner of the club, of forcibly entering their room and assaulting them.
Following a formal complaint, the Mapusa police initiated an investigation and subsequently arrested Sharma under various sections, including causing hurt and using force against women.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Sandesh Chodankar confirmed the arrest, stating that Deepak Sharma of the AIFF was taken into custody after being questioned by the authorities, the news agency said in its report. He is expected to be produced in court on Sunday for remand.
The Goa Football Association (GFA) President Caetano Fernandes stated that the association assisted the victims in filing the complaint with the Mapusa police station.
It is noteworthy that Deepak Sharma holds positions not only in the AIFF but also as the secretary-general of the Himachal Pradesh Football Association. The incident has raised concerns about the safety and well-being of female athletes and underscores the importance of ensuring a secure environment for all participants in sports events.
